Essays For Explication
This book is a full-scale collection, with 53 selections rhetorically arranged and the lead essay in each chapter explicated. This book contains a few more readings than are found in most anthologies, perhaps because the material includes argument and persuasion in addition to the 10 patterns of exposition. The primary goal of the text is to bring together a number of memorable, if not exciting pieces, those "rounded wholes" instructors hope to receive from their own students which provide useful instruction, a fresh insight, or an original chain of reasoning. A second goal is to acquaint student writers with the basic elements of rhetoric so that they can learn to read, not by roaming the page, but by grasping the whole through a thoughtful study of key aspects. When students perceive that they will be asked to apply explication, a time-honored system of analysis, to a wealth of practical prose forms-comparison, definition, induction, process analysis, example-they should be motivated to make good progress in using this text.
