One purpose of this book is to identify and review what is known about later life and the methods by which this information was obtained. The author has attempted to accomplish this purpose in a fairly nontechnical manner, but a certain amount of specialized language has proved necesary. The glossary, which appears at the back of the book, contains definitions of most of the technical terms used in the book. The index of terms and organizations should also prove helpful. Another, perhaps even more important, purpose in the writing the book was to motivate and point to some directions for further study and research on this most interesting and increasingly influential stage of human existence.
